The zona pellucida is the second layer that protects the oocyte It consists of glycoproteins and is partially dissolved by enzymes from the spermcell_acrosome.
As soon as this happens the zona reaction occurs. It changes the permeability of the zona pellucida rendering it impossible for another spermcell to penetrate the zona.
