At the fifteenth day of embryonic development the primitive streak appears at the caudal end of the embryo. It expands mainly in caudal direction. The primitive streak is formed by cells derived from the epiblast that have migrated to the midline. They migrate inwardly thus forming the deeper layers. The remaining epiblast cells are referred to as ectoderm whereas the deeper layers differentiate into mesoderm and endoderm
