The meiosis

The meiosis

The result of a meiotic division is the reduction by half of the number of chromosomes and the amount of DNA, as previous duplication is left out as in a mitotic division. Characteristic for meiosis is the pairing of homologous chromosomes just before dividing. After the first meiosis the newly formed cells contain 23 chromosomes of two chromatids each.

In spermatogenesis this is followed by a second meiotic division resulting in cells containing 23 chromosomes of 1 chromatid each. This occurs later in oogenesis.
